Successful People - Frederick Banting & Charles Best

Successful People: Frederick Banting & Charles Best
I believe that success is more than just being rich and famous. A successful person is someone who uses their knowledge to influence their community in a positive way. The change doesn’t have to be big; if it affects even one person, then I believe that is success. To achieve success, one must be determined and have some interest in what their goal is. Most importantly, you must be happy with yourself to be successful.
Frederick Banting and Charles Best have made a great contribution to millions in the world with their discovery of insulin, a fluid that controls diabetes.
Frederick Banting was born on November 14, 1891 in Alliston, Ontario. He attended the University of Toronto, first taking a course in theology, and later on a medical course. Banting served in both World Wars, and died in the second one in Newfoundland on February 1941.
Charles Best, Banting’s assistant, was born on February 27, 1899 in West Pembroke, Maine. Both his parents were Canadians. Best also was a medical student in the University of Toronto, but interrupted his studies to join the Canadian army. On March 31, 1978, Charles Best died in Toronto.
Since Banting was in high school, he had been influenced to learn about diabetes by a close classmate who had died because of this medical problem. He wanted to find a cure.
One evening while in his own medical office, Banting read an article about discoveries in fighting diabetes. This is when he decided to take more interest in this disorder.
Banting & Best faced many obstacles. One of the main problems that they ran into earlier in their success was that a professor named Macleod did not let them use his laboratory to conduct any experiments until much later on. Also, Banting had to give up on his surgical practices in order to experiment in Toronto. This caused him many debt and financial problems. Their experiments failed multiple times before they got the proof they needed.
Finally, they had discovered insulin, a fluid that controls diabetes. Frederick and Charles had had many accomplishments. In November 1921, Banting and Charles wrote a paper called “The Internal Secretion of the Pancreas”, which got published and attracted scientists and diabetics from all over the world to see these brilliant men.
Frederick Banting was the first Canadian to win a Nobel Prize, which he received in 1923 under the category of medicine. In 1934, Banting was knighted by King George V. Charles Best had also made a medical discovery of the vitamin choline, and was one of the first to introduce anticoagulants to treat blood clots. When Banting passed away, Best became the head of the Banting and Best Department of Medical Research.
These two men have made an enormous contribution to our world. They have allowed millions of people living with diabetes to have control over their disorder and live longer. The work that Banting has done and the challenges he has faced shows that one person can contribute to our community greatly, and his discovery definitely has helped millions all around the world.
